BCAA

What is it?

BCAA stands for Branched-Chain Amino Acids — a group of three essential amino acids: Leucine, Isoleucine and Valine. They are called essential because the human body cannot produce them, requiring them through diet or supplementation. Leucine is the primary activator of muscle protein synthesis via mTOR. BCAAs are metabolized directly in the muscle, unlike most amino acids that pass through the liver.

Main Benefits

  • Stimulates muscle protein synthesis (especially via Leucine)
  • May reduce muscle breakdown during intense training
  • Reduction of central fatigue during prolonged exercise
  • Support for post-workout muscle recovery
  • Useful in fasted training to preserve muscle mass

Who it's for

  • People who train fasted
  • Athletes in prolonged caloric deficit
  • Those who cannot reach daily protein targets through food
  • Practitioners of long-duration activities (endurance)
  • People on restrictive diets with risk of catabolism

Common Dose

5g to 10g per dose. Most studied ratio: 2:1:1 (Leucine:Isoleucine:Valine). Consume before, during or after training.

How to Choose

BCAA is most relevant for those who train fasted, are in severe caloric deficit, or cannot reach daily protein targets. If you already consume Whey Protein with adequate protein intake, the additional benefit is marginal. Prefer products with a 2:1:1 ratio of Leucine:Isoleucine:Valine.

What the Science Says

The benefit of BCAA is most pronounced in contexts of insufficient protein intake. Studies show that when total protein intake is adequate (1.6–2.2g/kg), additional BCAA supplementation offers no significant advantage. In fasted workouts or caloric restriction, BCAAs demonstrate efficacy in reducing muscle catabolism.

Possible Side Effects

Generally very well tolerated. At very high doses it may cause amino acid imbalance. No documented adverse effects at normal use doses.

Final Summary

BCAA is useful in specific contexts — mainly fasted training and severe caloric deficit. For those with adequate protein intake, Whey Protein delivers more value. Use with criteria and always prioritize total daily protein intake.
