Long Jack (Tongkat Ali)

What is it?

Tongkat Ali (Eurycoma longifolia), also known as Long Jack, is a medicinal plant native to the tropical forests of Southeast Asia — mainly Malaysia and Indonesia. It is considered the most potent herbal medicine for testosterone available, with multiple mechanisms of action: stimulates Leydig cells to produce more testosterone, inhibits SHBG (increasing free testosterone) and may inhibit aromatase (reducing testosterone-to-estrogen conversion). The active principles are quassinoids — especially eurycomanone and eurycolactones.

Main Benefits

  • Increased total and free testosterone
  • SHBG inhibition — higher fraction of active testosterone
  • Possible aromatase inhibition
  • Improved libido and male sexual function
  • Body composition support — more lean mass, less fat
  • Mood, energy and motivation improvement
  • Adaptogen — stress and cortisol reduction

Who it's for

  • Men with age-related testosterone decline
  • Men with low libido and compromised sexual function
  • Athletes seeking natural hormonal support
  • Men with high stress levels and elevated cortisol
  • Those seeking body composition improvement through hormonal pathway
  • Men over 35 with symptoms of androgenic decline

Common Dose

200mg to 400mg of standardized extract per day. The Physta® extract (standardized at 0.8–1.5% eurycomanone) is the most clinically studied. Take in the morning or split into 2 doses. Cycling recommended: 5 days on / 2 days off, or 4 weeks on / 1 week off.

How to Choose

Tongkat Ali is the herbal medicine with the strongest evidence for testosterone increase among those available — superior to Tribulus and comparable to Fenugreek in mechanism, but with more direct action on testicular production. Always prefer standardized extracts — especially Physta® (Malaysian) or LJ100® (also Physta). Generic extracts without standardization have unpredictable efficacy. Cycling is recommended to avoid receptor down-regulation. Combines well with Ashwagandha (reduces cortisol) and Zinc (testosterone cofactor).

What the Science Says

Tongkat Ali has the most robust evidence among herbal medicines for testosterone. Randomized controlled studies show increased total and free testosterone, reduced SHBG and improved sexual health parameters. A study published in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition showed a 37% increase in testosterone and 16% reduction in cortisol in men with moderate stress. Studies with Physta® show consistent benefit for libido, erectile function and body composition. The mechanism via Leydig cells is biologically well established.

Possible Side Effects

Generally well tolerated. May cause insomnia if taken at night (mild stimulant effect). May increase aggressiveness at very high doses. Market full of adulterated products — buy only from brands with quality certification. Poor quality extracts may contain heavy metals (mercury, lead) — real risk in the Asian market without certification.

Final Summary

Tongkat Ali is the herbal medicine with the strongest evidence for testosterone available — with multiple mechanisms of action and solid clinical studies. Prefer Physta® or LJ100®. Use cycled to maximize effect. Product quality is critical — avoid generic extracts without certified standardization. One of the most effective natural supplements for male hormonal health.
