Yohimbine
What is it?
Yohimbine is an alkaloid extracted from the bark of the Pausinystalia yohimbe tree, native to West Africa. It is a selective alpha-2 adrenergic receptor antagonist — these receptors, when activated, inhibit lipolysis (fat breakdown). By blocking them, Yohimbine allows adrenaline and noradrenaline to act more effectively in fat breakdown, especially in more resistant fat areas (abdomen and glutes in women). It is one of the few compounds with a proven pharmacological mechanism to assist in localized fat loss.
Main Benefits
- Increased lipolysis — especially in hard-to-mobilize fat
- Greater efficacy when fasted (no circulating insulin)
- May improve male sexual function (via sympathetic nervous system)
- CNS stimulant effect — increased energy and focus
- Enhances caffeine's effect on fat oxidation
Who it's for
- •People in advanced fat loss phase with resistant localized fat
- •Intermittent fasting practitioners who train fasted
- •Athletes in body definition phase with low body fat percentage
- •People with no history of anxiety, hypertension or heart problems
Common Dose
0.2mg/kg body weight, fasted, 30 to 60 minutes before training. Example: 70kg = 14mg. Start with low doses (2.5–5mg) to assess tolerance. NEVER combine with a meal — insulin completely blocks Yohimbine's effect.
How to Choose
Yohimbine is an advanced supplement — not for beginners. It requires absence of circulating insulin to work, so it MUST be used fasted. People with anxiety, hypertension, arrhythmia or use of antidepressants (especially MAOIs) should COMPLETELY AVOID it. Individual tolerance varies greatly — some people are very sensitive even at low doses. Always start with 2.5mg and increase gradually. Do not combine with other stimulants (excess caffeine, ephedrine). Yohimbe bark extract has variable and less predictable composition than isolated yohimbine HCl — prefer the isolated form for precise dosing.
What the Science Says
Yohimbine has solid pharmacological evidence for the alpha-2 blocking mechanism and increased lipolysis — especially in adipose tissue rich in alpha-2 receptors (abdomen, glutes, thighs). Human studies show additional fat loss compared to placebo, especially in fasted training. A study with soccer players showed significant body fat reduction vs. placebo. The effect is dependent on the absence of insulin — any carbohydrate intake nullifies the benefit.
Possible Side Effects
Anxiety, tachycardia and hypertension — especially in sensitive people or at high doses. Nausea, dizziness and excessive sweating. Insomnia if taken late. CONTRAINDICATED in: anxiety, hypertension, arrhythmias, liver or kidney failure, use of MAOIs, tricyclic antidepressants. Dangerous interaction with stimulants and cardiovascular medications.
Final Summary
Yohimbine is one of the few supplements with a real pharmacological mechanism for resistant localized fat — via alpha-2 blockade. Requires use in absolute fasted state to work. It is an advanced supplement with a more restricted safety profile — not indicated for beginners, anxious or hypertensive individuals. When used correctly, it is effective. Prefer isolated yohimbine HCl for precise dosing.
